Normandy (D-Day) Invasion
The Normandy Invasion was by the Allied Forces against
the German Defenses:
Codename: Operation 'Overlord',
was launched against five beaches on the Normandy
Coast between the base of the Cotentin peninsula in
the west and the Orne estuary in the east. Under supreme
command of the American Gen Dwight D.Eisenhower, a
force of over 5,000 ships and landing craft, 11,000
aircraft, 175,000 men, 1,500 tanks, 20,000 other vehicles
and 3,000 artillery pieces crossed the Channel and
began landing during the early morning of 6 June 1944.
The ground force was 21st Army Group
- 2nd British (Gen Dempsey) and 1st US (Gen Bradley)
Armies - under command of Gen Montgomery.
The British suffered about 3,000 casualities and
by nightfall the bulk of the invasion force was ashore.
